Immunisation Schedule and Clinic Dates

  Thu 29 November 12

Immunisation protects children (and adults) against harmful infections before they come into contact with them in the community. Immunisation uses the body's natural defence mechanism - the immune response - to build resistance to specific infections. Immunisation helps children stay healthy by preventing serious infections.

Common side effects for most immunisations are;

  • low grade fever
  • grizzly unsettled behaviour
  • soreness, swelling and redness around injections site

It is recommended to treat these side effects with extra fluids, not to overdress if hot and give paracetamol to lower fever if needed.
The Polio vaccine may also cause muscle aches.
The MeaslesMumps-Rubella vaccine may also cause a faint rash (non-infectious), cough, puffy eyes and drowsiness. Swelling of the facial glands may also occur about 3 weeks after immunisation.
