However gracefully (or not!) you take to parenting, at some point in the first two years of your child's life, the wheels can spin off and we wonder what we have done...

So, here is some fabulous news for all Illawarra parents with under two's who are having a difficult time.

Because it is at this sleep deprived time as you are second guessing everything, that you need compassion, expertise AND practical support.

Introducing an Illawarra service from Figtree Private Hospital that does just that - The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre.

Here at Parents Guide Illawarra, where none of our team took to parenting gracefully (!), we are joyously celebrating the presence of The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre as it offers a safe haven for parents and babies - a place where parents will be supported with compassion and offered guidance in your efforts to care for your little ones.

So, as an exhausted and likely overwhelmed parent facing the physical, emotional and social challenges that a new baby can bring, you can access personalised assistance in these tricky areas of parenting:

The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre is part of Figtree Private Hospital and this new child and family health service is the first of its kind in the Illawarra.

The service is delivered in a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment featuring newly renovated patient accommodation (so you get to stay in and benefit from round the clock support) and play areas for your child. Together, The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre qualified staff provide an integrated treatment approach, working in partnership with families to develop a sustainable, individualised action plan. Personalised care is coupled with group education, helping to strengthen confidence and empower caregivers in their parenting journey.

Care is provided in a professional hospital environment which has been newly redeveloped to offer all the comforts of home. The unit features renovated patient rooms, purpose designed group education facilities and both indoor and outdoor play areas, appropriately designed for children aged two months to two years.

Depending on your specific parenting concerns, you may attend a day program or participate in the Illawarra Early Parenting Centre’s intensive five night, six day inpatient program.

Hospital Facilities
The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre offers 20 spacious, newly renovated infant and caregiver rooms. Each room includes double bed, ensuite bathroom, air-conditioning, TV with Foxtel access, phone and bar fridge. Rooms contain furniture and accessories for your child including ergonomically designed cot, infant bath and shower seat, block out curtains and play mat.

Indoor and outdoor children’s play areas allow for social interaction with other parents and children during your stay. The indoor playroom is a spacious and secure playroom ideal for babies with views of the surrounding hospital grounds. A newly constructed outdoor playground provides a sheltered space for little ones play and explore.

The Program
The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre
focuses on a ‘strengths-based’ model of care, which involves staff and caregivers working in partnership to develop an action plan addressing your specific parenting challenges.

This might include increasing parent’s skills and confidence in responding to the needs of their baby, improving sleep and settling behaviours, reducing the impacts of exhaustion or supporting secure bonding and attachment interactions between parents and their babies.

Depending on your specific parenting concerns, you may attend a day program at the hospital or participate in an intensive five night, six day inpatient program. Nursing staff are available to review your progress and provide support throughout the program, offering compassionate, hands-on help as required.

The Illawarra Early Parenting Centre is a private service and cost of your stay will depend on your level of private health insurance cover. Figtree Private Hospital will contact you prior to your admission to advise your estimated out of pocket expenses.

After Care and Support
Upon completion of the program, the team who cared for you and your baby meet to review your progress. If necessary, recommendations and referrals for further support will be provided. Within the fortnight after discharge, staff from the Illawarra Early Parenting Centre provide a follow up call to discuss goal progress and problem solve any issues that may be encountered.
